Natural Menopause Remedies

Sunblock or Vitamin DHot flashes, hair loss, night sweats, irritability, depression and insomnia.  Yuck!  If you know these symptoms well, you’re probably a menopausal woman.  Kinda stinks, right?  Fear not – there are a number of natural menopause remedies that make this normal and inevitable process much easier while avoiding the toxic crap found in so many menopause treatments.

Omega Fatty Acids

These essential fatty acids (EFAs) are crucial for many of our body’s’ processes throughout life. This EFA family includes omega 3, 6, 7 and 9.  Of special interest to menopausal women is gamma-linolenic acid or GLA, an omega 6 EFA known for its anti-inflammatory qualities, which makes it a must have for anti-aging and an excellent natural menopause remedy for inflammatory processes related to hair loss, night sweats and other pesky aches and pains.

Vegan sources are your best bets for omega fatty acids.    Oils with high levels of GLA include evening primrose, hemp seed and borage – all of these combat the hair loss and dry skin you may be experiencing with menopause.   Try spriulina as well – it’s a great anti-aging remedy.  Make sure that you use a high quality supplement and balance omega 3 and omega 6 to achieve the greatest health benefit.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E has been used to ease menopause symptoms since the 1940s.  It is one of the better natural menopause remedies because it subs in for estrogen, helping to alleviate hot flashes and restore some normalcy to our hormonal balance.  Further, vitamin E helps restore electrolyte balance, also making night sweats and hot flashes less intense.  Vitamin E also restores the skin’s natural elasticity and promotes vascular health, so is a great anti-aging remedy as well.

Be sure to avoid synthetic vitamin E, which can be hazardous, and instead opt for a natural source.  If you opt for a vegan diet, which is recommended by many, there are many vegan vitamin E sources.  Almonds, sunflower seeds, turnips, peanut butter, safflower oil and argan oil are all packed with vitamin E, and even have some benefits of their own.  Argan oil in particular is rich with anti-oxidants, so has potent anti-aging and anti-inflammatory effects.  Just be sure to use pure organic argan oil – skip the adulterated, mass-produced products that often do more harm than good, and always buy from a trusted source.

Evening Primrose Oil

A North American native, the evening primrose has been used for medicinal purposes thousands of years, and is one of our favorite natural menopause remedies.  Alternative practitioners prescribe evening primrose oil to reduce bloating, headaches, breast tenderness and back pain.  Like vitamin E, evening primrose is a gentle moisturizer, and keeps your skin hydrated without leaving it greasy.

Yoga

Mental attitude has a lot to do with how we adjust to menopause, and exercise promotes good mental as well as physical health.  At No Bull Beauty, we recommend a daily dose of exercise.  Yoga is particularly beneficial, as it abounds in both physical and mental benefits.  Yoga increases flexibility, improves blood flow and improves our mood, so is great for the irritability and depression sometimes associated with menopause.  There is even some evidence that yoga may restore hormonal balance in menopausal women.

Yoga also reverses signs of aging, so packs a powerful one-two punch.  Inverted postures improve facial circulation to reduce dark circles, detoxify and improve collagen production.  The health and mental wellbeing benefits gained from yoga are better than any cream or potion for keeping you young inside and out.

Meditation

Meditation is also an excellent way to quiet your mind, and reduce the stress and mood disruptions associated with menopause and aging in general.  We live in a fast-paced world and most of us are constantly crunched for time, but squeezing in just 15 minutes of daily meditation can make a world of difference for your physical and mental health.

Menopause does not have to be synonymous with misery if we don’t let it.  Contrary to popular belief, we also don’t have to pump ourselves full of hazardous hormone replacement therapy to keep menopause symptoms in check.  These all-natural menopause remedies will keep you feeling your best without the risk.
